Rep. Obernolte secures $11 million for CA-08 projects including $757,803 for road improvements in Needles

July 30, 2021

U.S. Congressman Jay Obernolte (CA-08) secured $11 million in funding for projects in California’s 8th District that passed the U.S. House of Representatives as part of this week’s major appropriations package. The funds include $757,803 for road and water infrastructure improvements in Needles.

“Rural areas such as California’s 8th District have historically received less funding per capita than urban areas, which is unfair. Securing funds for projects like this is critical to improving the quality of life in rural California and supporting the needs of the people who call our community home,” said Rep. Obernolte.

“This action by Rep. Obernolte is great for the residents and businesses in Needles,” said Needles Mayor Jeff Williams. “As a 108-year-old city our street and water infrastructure is crumbling faster than it can be fixed. The citizens of Needles all thank Representative Obernolte for his ongoing responsiveness to our most critical needs.”

The $757,803 in funding will be allocated towards the First Year Paving Replacement Phase 3 project in Needles as part of the city’s street pavement rejuvenation program to restore streets to good condition while improving the deteriorated water infrastructure underneath. The city’s road system is currently in urgent need of maintenance and repair with residents unable to cover the cost. The town of Needles has a population of approximately 4,320 with the median household income of $39,022.
