Rep. Obernolte on President Biden’s upcoming State of the Union Address

April 28, 2021

U.S. Representative Jay Obernolte (R-Hesperia) released the following statement today ahead of President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union address:

“Almost 100 days ago, President Biden stood before the American people as he took the oath of office and promised to unite the country under the umbrella of bipartisanship. Since then, we have seen the President and Congress take unprecedented actions to pass major spending bills that generated bipartisan opposition instead of bipartisan support. We have seen a border crisis take hold due to executive actions that blocked continued border security improvements. And we have seen our children fall further behind as states like California fail to reopen schools despite the science which indicates reopening is safe.

“Tonight, it is my hope that President Biden uses his first State of the Union Address to propose the bipartisan policies that he promised to the American people. We need to enforce the rule of law and strengthen security at our southern border to end the migrant crisis and to stop the flow of drugs and the scourge of human trafficking into our communities. We need to come together on sensible infrastructure investments to improve our roads and bridges, fix our water storage problems, and strengthen our electrical grid — not impose a costly Green New Deal package that will spike energy prices and increase poverty. We need to collaborate to cut underperforming federal programs and bring our national debt and deficit under control without raising taxes at a time when our economy is at its most vulnerable. We need to find common ground to improve the quality of life for our military families and veterans. Most of all, we need to unite to bring back jobs and reopen our schools so that our communities once again can thrive. I look forward to hearing the President’s remarks and hope he will work with Congress on both sides of the aisle to achieve the goals we all share.”
