Rep. Obernolte announces winners of Congressional Art Competition

U.S. Congressman Jay Obernolte (R-Hesperia) announced the winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition at a reception for the competition participants, their families and local art teachers at the Hesperia Library on Friday. The winning artwork was chosen from submissions across California’s 8th District as part of the annual U.S. House of Representatives competition.
“This year’s Congressional Art Competition for the 8th District had over 50 submissions from talented high school artists across our community,” said Rep. Obernolte. “I was profoundly impressed by the depth of thought behind many of the submissions, as well as the creativity and artistic prowess that went into these pieces. The young artists who submitted work this year should be extremely proud of their accomplishments, and I look forward to seeing even more of our students enter the competition next year.”
The winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition are:
- First Place: Raquel Garcia (grade 12), Hesperia High School: “Heartless”
- Second Place: Jenny Garcia (grade 11), Hesperia High School: “Stuck in time”
- Third Place: Johanna Moreno (grade 12), Hesperia High School: “Seeking beauty"

As the first place winner, Raquel’s work will represent California’s 8th District in an exhibit in the United States Capitol Building. The second and third place winning artwork will be displayed in Congressman Obernolte’s Washington DC and Hesperia offices, respectively. The winners were determined by an independent panel of local judges.
Each spring, members of the U.S. House of Representatives host a nationwide high school art competition, offering a unique opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity of each district's young artists. The competition began in 1982, and since then more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
