Finding Federal Savings Committee Resolution would trim federal programs, lower national debt

January 18, 2023

U.S. Congressman Jay Obernolte (R-Hesperia) has reintroduced his Finding Federal Savings Committee Resolution to help bring fiscal responsibility back to the federal government. The bill is modeled after the post-World War II era Anti-Appropriations Committee and would establish a bipartisan committee within the U.S. House of Representatives to find and recommend the modification or elimination of underperforming and nonessential federal programs. This would significantly decrease federal spending by reducing the size of the federal government while streamlining the mammoth federal bureaucracy.

“Over the past several years, the size of the federal government, and therefore also our national debt, has grown tremendously. It is imperative that we take immediate action to lower federal spending and bring our debt under control to stabilize our economy and put our country back on track,” said Rep. Obernolte. “My bill creates a bipartisan committee that will help to identify and subsequently modify or eliminate federal programs that are duplicative or just aren’t working, trimming the fat of the federal bureaucracy and ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent where they are most effective.”

The United States currently has a debt of over $31.4 trillion, or $94,000 for every American citizen. Projections from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office indicate that figure will increase rapidly, with the federal deficit predicted to average $1.2 trillion between 2022 and 2031 as a result of recent spending packages. The federal debt is projected to reach 195% of the nation’s GDP by 2050, the highest in U.S. history.

H. Res. 29, the Finding Federal Savings Committee Resolution has received key endorsements from the National Taxpayers Union, Americans for Prosperity, and the Heritage Foundation. Itis cosponsored by 19 members of Congress including Reps. Jeff Duncan (SC-03), Brian Babin (TX-36), Daniel Webster (FL-11), Barry Moore (AL-02), Scott Perry (PA-10), Stephanie Bice (OK-05), Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), James Baird (IN-04), John Curtis (UT-03), Scott Franklin (FL-18), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), Burgess Owens (UT-04), Michelle Steel (CA-45), Claudia Tenney (NY-24), Randy Weber (TX-14), Kat Cammack (FL-03), Lauren Boebert (CO-03), David Valadao (CA-22) and Ralph Norman (SC-05).

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

Rep. Kat Cammack (FL-03): “One of House Republicans’ goals this Congress was to improve transparency and accountability of the federal government, especially when it comes to how American taxpayers’ dollars are spent. In just the first few weeks of this Congress, we’ve already taken major steps toward this goal, and I’m glad to join Rep. Obernolte on his resolution that advances this mission. The American people need less federal government overreach in their lives, not more.”

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (CA-01): "Every year, Washington bureaucrats waste money on frivolous programs that don’t help Americans and don’t improve their quality of life in any meaningful way. Establishing a committee to investigate nonessential programs is a sensible first step to eliminating wasteful government spending and bringing fiscal responsibility back to our nation’s capital."

Rep. Burgess Owens (UT-04): "An avalanche of national debt worth $31 trillion threatens to destroy America's economy. Families in Utah and across the country are paying the price of Democrat's out-of-control spending at the gas pump, in the grocery store, and everywhere in between. I am proud to support the Finding Federal Savings Committee Resolution to balance the budget, address our national debt, and bring sanity back to Washington."

Rep. Michelle Steel (CA-45): “I am proud to offer my continued support for Rep. Obernolte’s resolution to take this common sense step to rein in our national debt. The federal government is addicted to out of control spending, resulting in a national debt that will rest on the shoulders of our children and our children’s children. The American people deserve immediate action to cut the unnecessary, failing, and duplicative federal programs that keep taxes and our national debt high.”

Rep. David Valadao (CA-22): “House Republicans are committed to reducing wasteful government spending and big government bureaucracy. I’m proud to cosponsor Rep. Obernolte’s bill which will help identify areas where we can adjust spending and cut red tape. A smaller government that’s more accountable to the people it serves is the only way to bring down our national debt and get our country back on track.”

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01): “Government programs that are outdated or underperforming shouldn’t continue to receive federal funding. By eliminating these wasteful programs, we can begin to address our growing national debt, reign in federal overreach, and restore accountability in our government.”

Andrew Lautz, National Taxpayers Union: "Members of Congress need to start working in a bipartisan fashion to study where government programs are either not fulfilling their mission or are overlapping with other government programs and activities. Representative Obernolte's Finding Federal Savings Committee would put nine Republicans and nine Democrats on the task of identifying potential budget savings for American taxpayers. NTU is proud to endorse the creation of a Finding Federal Savings Committee.”
