Valley Voices: Hitting the debt ceiling should mean reducing federal spending, not increasing it

For any American family, managing a budget is an essential part of keeping a household running. Adults across America sit down at their kitchen tables every month to prioritize their needs and wants, balancing the money coming in with the amount of money going out.

In a perfect world, the United States’ budget would be no different — but for years, our country has kicked the can down the road, increasing spending programs at a rate far higher than revenues and leaving it to future generations to foot the bill. Last year, our national debt exceeded the size of our total economy for the first time since World War II, and the Congressional Budget Office reports that it will continue to grow at an alarming rate unless action is taken.
